Equitable Fossil Fuel Phase-Out
Youth climate justice activists from around the world are uniting to send an urgent message. The climate crisis continues to threaten the safety and livelihood of billions of people, especially marginalized communities. States can’t keep willingly ignoring the only solution to avoid climate chaos: an Equitable Fossil Fuel Phase-Out.AN EQUITABLE FOSSIL FUEL PHASE-OUT
The IPCC 6th Assessment Report is clear: the only way to mitigate temperatures from rising dramatically is to implement an equitable fossil fuel phase-out by 2050. This call to action is more urgent than ever as scientists predict we will overshoot 1.5 degrees by 2027, putting 10 million more people at risk of coastal flooding from sea-level rise and increasing extreme heat exposure for the most vulnerable. We recognize that fossil fuels form the backbone of many economies, especially in the Global South; however, an equitable phase-out would support a just transition to clean energies and a stable economy. An equitable transition must be carried out in a way that ensures the burdens and benefits are re-distributed fairly among different stakeholders, with particular attention to historically marginalized and vulnerable communities. Therefore we are asking for an equitable fossil fuel phase-out to be included in the COP28 cover decision as well as meaningful mechanisms achieved through the Mitigation Ambition and Implementation and Just Transition Work Programs.EXCLUDE OIL & GAS REPRESENTATIVES FROM UNFCCC SPACES
The corporate capture and lobbying by the fossil fuel industry have prevented the UNFCCC space from taking the actions needed to tackle the climate crisis. As such, a conflict-of-interest policy must be created. If the fossil fuel industry maintains its presence in climate negotiations and exerts influence over decision-making processes that impede significant climate action, the credibility of the UNFCCC will be undermined.THE GLOBAL NORTH MUST FUND A GLOBAL JUST TRANSITION
The root cause of the climate crisis is the massive emissions generated by the industrialization of Global North countries and their exploitation of Global South resources and labor. As such, it is their responsibility, as polluters, to pay the yearly trillion dollars they owe in debt and finance a just transition, including for loss and damage. Therefore, governments must agree at COP28 to implement new mechanisms to make big polluters pay for loss and damage. The allocation of funds should be transparent and accountable to local communities to ensure the prioritization of vulnerable and marginalized populations, including Indigenous peoples and women. Additionally, the fossil fuel industry must contribute its part due to the harm caused to marginalized communities and vulnerable populations.
